Project Porta Nuova Garibaldi

Porta Nuova, through the reconstruction of the areas of Garibaldi, Isola and Varesine, extends for over 290,000 m². This project of urban fabric redevelopment, besides fostering the natural development of the existing districts, represents a model of excellence and sustainable design innovation in Italy and abroad. The project consisted of the construction of a continuous pedestrian system, characterized by green areas, squares, bridges and a large carpark that provides a safe and easy connection between the different districts. The project consists of various spaces.

The redevelopment of the Porta Nuova area reinterprets the roadway system through the construction of a new tunnel (Via del Nord) and one neighbouring street to Garibaldi Repubblica (Via Del Sud) along with the new connections between Garibaldi Repubblica and the existing roadway system (Podio-Viale Como and Podio Stazione Garibaldi).

Fire safety project with the performance-based approach for Sunken Piazza

The works in the area of Porta Nuova Garibaldi included the construction of the following architectural elements: Podio, TOWERS A, B, and C, BUILDINGS E1 and E2, and the public connection tunnel between Via del Nord, Via del Sud and Piazza Gae Aulenti. Ing. Amaro was appointed Safety coordinator during the design and execution stage and PM for the whole project.

The peculiarity of the project was the management of the interferences between neighbouring areas, the surrounding roadway system and the annexed spaces. In this sense, a community path of the district and the city was also developed, which saw the involvement of citizens from the beginning to the end of the construction site. The critical issues were resolved before the commencement of the works thanks to an analysis study of the building phases and through an ongoing coordination with the persons in charge of the sectors/areas involved. This led to the sharing of the intervention methods regarding the roadway system, the management of the accesses and the intervention methods to clean road sediments, ensuring compliance with the executive schedules and avoiding divergences between managers/spokespersons of the different building sites/areas. The detailed process of analysis laid down the choice of operating techniques, procedures and provisions such as to reduce the critical issues due to the works carried out at significant height, such as levels confinements, use of wind shields, objects fall protection nets and gravel guard protection fans. The interdiction of the spaces beneath the areas of operations and the temporary space availability allowed the execution of works by drastically minimizing the interference risk which may arise in the event of works carried out at significant height.
