French Pavilion – Expo Milan 2015

Market, barn and wine cellar, cathedral and beehive. The French Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015 was all those things together, thanks to its particular structure, inspired by the image of the halles, the traditional indoor markets scattered all over France. Entirely made of French wood, the building (called “Canopée”) was made of red spruce inside and larch outside and presented complex patterns, made of curves and counter-curves, which spotlighted the capacity of wood to shape unusual lines. As soon as visitors entered the pavilion, they were welcomed by an agricultural garden, one of the largest gardens of the whole Universal Exposition, which was divided into 16 portion of field broken down by varieties. At this point of the itinerary, visitors had access to the hexagonal covered structure. Inside this large wooden “market”, visitors were completely submerged in an inverted landscape of hills. The beams of such “habited roof” created an original and very wavy surface.

In the scope of the design development, it consulted RTI about the following aspects:

Project Manager – Safety coordinator during the design and execution stage.

Safety coordinator during disassembly.
